We love Virtual Console but man fuck writing a full review of something we just paid six dollars for. Have a Quick Hit instead.

You may recognize Shantae as the very last Game Boy Color game ever released - eight months after the debut of the Game Boy Advance, no less. As such, it was printed in extremely limited numbers, sold poorly and is now one of the rarest video games out there. Which is a shame, as it was actually a high quality platformer, easily among the best the Game Boy had to offer. Hell, it even arguably surpassed some of the greats on the NES and SNES.

Well, after a decade of unsuccessful attempts to revive the franchise, Shantae finally got a sequel on DSiware, and the result is excellent. The gameplay is reminiscent of Metroid or Zelda with its heavy emphasis on exploration and finding items to unlock new areas, as well as incorporating the multi-tiered stages of Wario Land for the Virtual Boy - you are able to leap into the background and foreground to reach new areas via colored arrows in each stage, each of which can connect to new areas in its own right. Thankfully, the game also provides you with a map and several teleportation points, making it easy to figure out where you need to go next and get there without having to backtrack through tons of terrain.

I also have to give mention to the game's excellent presentation. The visuals are bright, colorful and extremely detailed, and the animation is top-notch. The music and sound effects are also quite good, portraying the various locales perfectly. I especially like the Arabian theme in the hub town. But most impressive are the enormous sprites for the bosses, which have an attention to detail almost on par with the early Metal Slug games - they're quite stunning to see in still, to say nothing of them moving around, firing attacks at you and reacting realistically when hit.

Shantae: Risky's Revenge is the single most expensive game on the service at present, costing a total of 1200 points ($12), but it's worth every cent - 3D games may be the new standard, but Shantae stands as proof that 2D will always have its place in the industry. Let's hope they can get the original Shantae on there as well if they start rereleasing old Game Boy games for download.

Oh, and you get a free 100 gem bonus in the first town if you've also purchased Mighty Flip Champs. So go for it!
