We love Virtual Console but man fuck writing a full review of something we just paid six dollars for. Have a Quick Hit instead.

At first, Donkey Kong on the Game Boy starts off much like its arcade counterpart, having you pursue Donkey Kong through four levels to rescue Pauline. However, after those, it quickly becomes something entirely different - a complex puzzle game involving traversing numerous hazards to collect a key and get through a door with it, with a mini boss fight against Kong every four stages. It was also notable for being one of a handful of games to take advantage of the Super Game Boy to its fullest extent, having a custom border and some very colorful and detailed graphics.

The 3DS Virtual Console port is the same, but sadly without any support for the added colors or SGB border (or indeed, any color at all outside of the standard grayscale or yellowish-green color palettes that come standard for all 3DS Virtual Console titles). Bit of a letdown, that. Still, it is a very impressive game for its time, and serves as a great precursor to the Mario VS Donkey Kong series. So if you like those, or just like action puzzle games in general, give this one a go.
