Well once again, a popular video game series got an outing on the old Game Boy, and once again the result is pretty damn good, if a bizarre departure in style from the rest of the series. Enemies ranging from Moai heads to seahorses to giant insects to what looks like hopping women with hook-hands trying to stab you and, perhaps strangest of all, giant fists launching out of pipes to crush you. It also adds a bit of gameplay variety in the form of side-scrolling shooter stages, with one taking place in a submarine and the other in a plane (which also serves as the stage for the game's final battle). There's also some added of replay value in the form of a harder quest, which adds more enemies and hazards to the levels to give you a much greater challenge.

In short, Mario Land is more than just a scaled-down portable Super Mario Brothers - it adds plenty of unique elements of its own and stands apart as a unique and bizarre title in the series. Hey, there must be a good reason it's the third highest selling Mario game of all time.

score:

Four bucks well spent!
