R-Type Leo, Sidescrolling Shoot'em'up from the creators of the R-Type series, IREM.
Lately I've been getting into this series. It seemed about that time when I moved on when I found a copy of R-Type Final for PS2 at Pawn America for $8 bucks, sweet deal, huh?Final has some really cool atmospheric designs, rivaling the sense one gets playing Einhander with it's gothic cyberpunk setting.I am impressed although the game boasts some long occassions of slowdown... which are not that much of a pain to experience.
When I think of R-Type games I think of nasty surprises of the environment messing me up, (probably a wall, usually.)And Final brought me back to that brief nostalgia with Super R-Type for the SNES, which I had only played long times ago.Final's catch is that you can earn all these different kinds of ships to use with varying beamstypes, missles, bits and charge attack strengths etc.I think it's cool cause I like to see bigger beams and longer beams and shorter stronger beams, especially since all of it is to each individual ship... like a 100 of 'em, and customizable colors, oo!
Then I turned to R-Type Leo released in 1992 I think in the Arcades.(MAME)
The game to me is like the joyeous side of R-type, the game is really colorful, the weapons are all useful in specific situations depending how you 'use em.And the soundtrack is really classic, think dance disco sega type music, it's really catchy and there's a dude that says before each stage, (3, 2, 1 lets go! *gameplay and music queues)
The game makes me feel like I can beat it, although I always get my butt kicked in 1 credit anyway.Sign of good replay value, no crazy scoring system, just get some good points to get another extra, (I bet you can get two...) cause the lives really matter.I like this compared to Mushihime-sama, a shooter by Cave (japanese shmup pimphouse in Japan) wherein dying once is so tragic and messes up your score playing in Maniac mode.Although, admittedly, the lack of a somewhat complicated scoring system is a breather after trying some Cave games myself.)
So, play some R-Type Leo, it's fun and will make you come back for me.
(3, 2, 1, Let's go!)
